Featured Poem: Processing Childhood Trauma—
This powerful piece was written in honor of the poet’s childhood experience with domestic abuse. Though the past was painful, today she shares her story to give voice to survivors and shed light on hidden trauma.
It Wasn’t The Monsters In The Closet
As a little girl
I would close my room closet door
to keep me safe
from the imaginary monsters
potentially hiding
in that abyss of darkness.Little did I know
I really needed protection
from the monsters lurking
right through my front door
every night
to “play a little game.”Through scary camp stories
and teenage horror films
the lessons clearly were
to never play with demons. But this demon’s name was Daddy.
